Two generators that appear to have the same power rating may be intended for different applications. “Standby” and “prime” ratings must be read alongside the manufacturer's stated conditions.
Standby power
Standby power takes over when the usual electricity supply becomes unavailable. Limits on operating time, allowable average load and overload capability depend on the generator set and its engine. A standby rating should not be interpreted as power available for unlimited operating hours.
Prime power
In this application, the generator supplies the normal source of electricity, for example at a remote site. Load profile, operating hours and fuel capacity matter when selecting equipment. Exact definitions vary according to the model's technical documentation.
The right question to ask
Always ask for the generator set's permissible electrical output for the intended application, voltage, phases and operating conditions. Engine mechanical power and the electrical power delivered by the generator are not necessarily identical.
