Choosing a generator
What generator power should I choose?
List the loads to be powered, including those needing extra starting power, then check voltage and phases. A quote can specify the appropriate model for your installation.
Can a generator power an entire home?
That depends on the selected capacity and the home's actual demand. Heating, pumps and other large appliances can significantly affect the result. Capacity is confirmed after the loads have been established.
What is the difference between standby and prime power?
Standby power is used during a grid outage. Prime power applies when the generator is the normal electricity source. Operating limits and permissible power ratings vary by model and its official specification sheet.
Does a generator start automatically?
Automatic starting can be provided with a compatible transfer system and suitable installation. It should not be assumed for every model.
Do the models operate at 60 Hz?
The specifications currently published show 60 Hz configurations. Frequency, voltage and phases must be confirmed for the unit offered in your quote.
Perkins generator maintenance
How often should a Perkins generator be serviced?
The schedule depends on the engine model, running hours and elapsed time. Perform routine pre-use checks and plan service according to the engine and generator set operation and maintenance manuals. The 500- and 1,000-hour thresholds are common reference points, not a schedule that applies to every model.
What should be checked before starting or during operation?
Monitor oil, coolant and fuel levels, battery condition, alarms and visible fuel, oil or coolant leaks. Also check the air intake, belts and exhaust. Follow the manual's safety instructions, with the engine stopped and cooled when required.
What checks should be done weekly or monthly?
Depending on usage frequency, inspect the air filter, belts, lines, battery and charger; check the fuel for water or sediment. A standby generator also needs periodic tests according to its manual. Oil, filter and coolant replacement is determined by model-specific intervals and operating conditions: monthly oil changes are not a general rule.
What does service at 500 or 1,000 hours include?
Depending on the engine, these service intervals may include oil and filter changes, inspection of the fuel, air intake and cooling systems, or mechanical adjustments. The manual for the serial number specifies the exact tasks and intervals; entrust specialized work to a qualified technician.
