If an outage occurs while you are away, how does the generator take over? An automatic transfer system can manage the transition when the equipment is compatible, installed and configured for that purpose.

From utility power to the generator and back

The switch selects the source supplying the connected circuits. The control detects utility failure and initiates starting. Transfer occurs once generator parameters are acceptable, according to the settings. When utility power returns, a delay may precede retransfer, followed by a no-load cooldown before shutdown.

Automatic does not mean uninterrupted

Starting and transferring take time. For equipment requiring uninterrupted power, have an uninterruptible power supply and its generator compatibility assessed. No single transfer time applies to every installation.

What should the quotation specify?

  • The transfer switch model and circuits supplied.
  • Voltage, phases and rated current.
  • Equipment, work and testing included in the price.
  • Responsibility for commissioning and maintenance.

Switchgear selection depends on the installation; have it confirmed by the professional responsible for the electrical work. A controller on the generator does not establish that a transfer switch is included.
