A standby generator may remain idle for long periods. It must still be ready to start reliably during an outage. The engine and generator set operation and maintenance manuals remain the reference for service intervals.
Routine checks
Plan inspections of the battery and charger, fuel and fluid levels, possible leaks and control panel alarms. Also check that the area around the generator remains clear and ventilation meets the configuration requirements.
Meaningful testing
A simple no-load start does not always reproduce outage conditions. Perkins recommends regular load tests for standby sets and refers to the exact model manual for the appropriate frequency. Test arrangements and duration must follow the equipment instructions and site installation requirements.
Keep a record
Record tests, operating hours, alarms and service work. This history helps identify problems before an outage.
