Perkins and Caterpillar: what is the connection for generators?

The Perkins and Caterpillar names often appear in the diesel engine industry. They are connected, but it is important to distinguish the parent group, the engine brand and the brand of the complete generator set.

Does Caterpillar own Perkins?

Yes. Caterpillar acquired Perkins Engines Company Limited in December 1997. Perkins remains an engine brand within the Caterpillar group. Both names continue to be used for distinct ranges and offerings.

Is a Perkins engine a Cat engine?

An engine sold under the Perkins brand carries that brand. Caterpillar's ownership of Perkins does not mean that a Perkins-powered generator is a Cat-branded generator, or that its specifications are identical to a Cat model. To compare two units, start with their exact model references and specification sheets.

What does this mean for a generator?

The diesel engine is only one part of the generator set. The alternator produces electricity, while the controller manages functions such as starting and monitoring. In the models we present, a Perkins engine is paired with a Stamford alternator; the DSE controller is selected for the project. Electrical output, frequency, voltage, phases and operating conditions are confirmed for the proposed unit.

Parts, maintenance and warranty: what should you check?

Ask for the engine model and serial number, along with the generator set, alternator and controller references. This information lets you consult the right manuals and confirm parts, service support and applicable warranties. Perkins being owned by Caterpillar does not by itself mean that a Cat part is compatible or a Cat warranty covers the complete set.
