Short answer: asking for a “220 V single-phase” generator means asking for a generator for a house’s normal electrical service, which is 120/240 V single-phase. That is the standard voltage of all our Perkins diesel generators from 10 to 60 kW. The output, on the other hand, is decided case by case, based on what you want to keep running.

“220 V”, “240 V”: the same power

Years ago, household power in Quebec really was 110/220 V, then 115/230 V: our grandparents called it “220”. The voltage has since been standardized at 120/240 V, but the name stuck. An appliance marked 220 V runs on today’s 240 V: it is the same household use.

Single-phase for a house, three-phase for a business

Three-phase (120/208 V, 277/480 V, 347/600 V) powers businesses, farms and industry. A house, even a large one, stays on 120/240 V single-phase: the output (kW) changes, not the voltage. Our models are also available in three-phase at the same price, but a house does not need it.

Which output? Case by case

Every house is different, and the age of the house has nothing to do with it. What drives the output is the equipment you want to keep running: electric heating, air conditioning, the garage or workshop. Some keep only the essentials; others want the whole house, hot tub included. Guidelines by use: which generator for your use.

We always assess first

At Solution NRJ, we do not size a generator by eye: we check the DMW value on your Hydro-Québec meter (how to read it) and the amperage of the equipment to keep running, including the starting current of a heat pump, an air conditioner or a well pump. The full method: choosing your generator size.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 240 V generator work with an appliance marked 220 V?

Yes. It is the same household power; “220 V” is the old name.

Does a large house need three-phase?

No. A house stays on 120/240 V single-phase; the output changes, not the voltage.

How do I know what output I need?

Send us a photo of the DMW value shown on your Hydro-Québec meter, or the list of equipment to keep running. We will tell you plainly what you need, without pushing you toward a bigger unit.
